Too Few Calories

So you plan a diet and you say ok, I will intake 1500 calories a day. I did it before and it worked fine, I wasn't hungry. Why is it so different now? Firstly, I have not exercised. I was walking 5 miles a day and that kept me busy and motivated and not hungry. I start the day off great with my oatmeal, my banana, my yogurt, my salad and then BOOM! 3 o'clock hits and it has been programmed into my souls since kindergarten, TIME TO EAT! Am I hungry? No. It is just some uncontrollable urge to eat..I must eat. And it isn't a granola bar, this is the time to binge. 3 bowls of cereal, 3 bowls of soup, a can of nuts. It is ridiculous and shameful, but like an addict I cannot ignore the call. If I try I just go nuts after. How to control this is the question.

I will need to increase my caloric intake as it is obvious that 1500 calories is too little and is making me loose control. I need to exercise, but I really don't have a place or time I can do it. Lame excuse, but my schedule is nuts. I need to retrain myself to combat the 3 o'clock binge. Maybe that is where I should have my coffee instead of 1 cup in the morning at school. It is my favorite thing and that might be a cure. I will begin that ritual tomorrow and hopefully go one day without the BIG B. I get home around 7:00 and Rahni's bed time is 8. I will go to bed the same time that she does and that will eliminate the night cravings and get up at 4:30 instead of 5:30 to do my housework and maybe add in some exercise somehow. I need to buy a tape or something.

So this week will be about retraining my mind to get back on the bus as a weight watcher counselor once told me and to control the food addiction. Good luck to you all.

The first few weeks are the WORST for feeling hungry. If you get through those then it gets easier. You are definitely not eating enough. I didnt know how tall you are but I knew you were around my height but I plugged in your numbers and to lose a pound a week, you need to eat 2300 cal/day. Here is the link:

Also, an 8 oz black coffee has 2 calories - its all the extras we put into it. But if you use skim milk or nonfat creamer and splenda it really lowers the calories. It sounds like you need to be prepared with snacks during the day - some of the best are special K bars, Quaker Flavored Rice cakes (you can eat a whole bag and only be in for 300 cal), fruit and veggies. It's not just the amount of calories we eat, its whats in those calories and trying to find a balance. You can read about the glycemic index to find good foods that fill you up.

It's hard but once you get through the first few weeks it does get easier - I promise!

Becky,

I have the same problem. I get the hungry horrors in the afternoon. That's when I hit the vending machine. Then sometimes I hit it again!!!! Devil dogs, snickers bars, chips, they are my favorite foods. I've tried bringing in an orange, an apple or a banana but for me it just doesn't cut it. So this week I'm trying something new. I've brought hot cocoa for my afternoon snack and 100 calorie pop popcorn. The cocoa is hot so you can't just suck it down and it's chocolatey so it sort of feeds that need. The popcorn is filling and eating it warm is comforting. But the other BIG thing I've realized is I'm not drinking enough water. I know if I did that it would really help. I think I eat when I'm thirsty. Sounds silly but it's so hard for me to think about drinking ice cold water when it's -10 degrees outside. Here's to trying new things because I know where my old habits get me.

Blah... I had written a great comment and lost it. The jist is... Three meals a day and a snack. 300 cals for breakfast (nice egg sandwich, egg beaters with a bit of yolk are food with diet bread) 300 calories for lunch (Subway salad with double meat, light on the oil and extra vinegar) and that leaves 1,400 calories left for dinner and a snack. 800 Calories for a roasted chicken (THROW THE SKIN OUT!) and a salad, veggies and a baked potato (spray butter has magic powers.) Then your last 600 is for a bowl of popcorn (air pop it and use butter flavored pam) or a skinny cow (yum, yum) or sugarfree popsicles, etc. Voila, 2,000 calories.
