Week Seven Results

In another week with a smashing Chris and Katie week, they continue to amaze with their dazzling, 2%, 14.4 pound weight loss this week. That's right, they are back and want it even more. John and Paula did manage to lose 2.5 lbs this week, so congrats to them as well. Overall the core teams have broke the 100 pound mark, with a total of 111.7 lbs. or 9.3%. Katie has broken the 50 lbs mark this week and Chris has broken the 10% weight loss mark!

We had some really solid performances from the honorary participants. (By the way, I think Michael and Lisa are going to be joining us, but they haven't confirmed yet, so if you talk to them, let them know we're here.) Aunt Ann found her footing again, coming down 1.5 lbs, Yvette lost a pound in spite of her "crazy week." Tom & Tracy lost 5 lbs this week. Jessica came out on top losing 3 lbs or 1.97%. Angela gained a bit, but still leads the overall HP race. Aunt Jeanne had the show this week, so there were some extra challenges, she gained 2 lbs, but I am sure she will get them back this week.

Overall, the Martin Weight Loss Challenge participants have lost 7.6% of their initial weight, this equals 168 lbs lost. This is an incredible performance. Why don't we put this in perspective. 168 lbs equals:

To lose that amount of fat would mean to burn 588,000 calories or 2,460,192 KiloJoules! That is the equivalent of 19.04 gallons of gasoline. If you could dump this many calories into the tank of a Honda Civic, you would be able to drive it about 645 miles before running out of gas!
Let's see how your goal would convert to other forms of fuel. 588,000 calories is equivalent to:

  • 19.04 gallons of gasoline, or
  • 210.05 pounds of coal, or
  • 291.75 pounds of oven-dried wood, or
  • 25.74 gallons of propane

This amount of energy would ...

  • Brew about 1,640 pots of coffee, or
  • Light a 60-watt light bulb for 11,390 hours ( 475 days = 1.33 years)

Cutting 588,000 calories is the same as saying "no" to:

  • 7,350 apples, or
  • 5,880 bananas, or
  • 34,588 cups of cabbage (whew!), or
  • 4,055 baked potatoes, or
  • 7,350 large eggs, or
  • 4,900 cups of 2% milk, or
  • 424 pounds of ground beef, or
  • 6,759 glasses of wine, or
  • 1,820 Snickers bars, or
  • 2,450 Clif Bars ( 3,267 Luna Bars), or
  • 4,230 cans of Coke, or
  • 3,459 pints of Guinness beer, or
  • 1,195 Big Macs, or
  • 1,142 Quarter Pounders with Cheese, or
  • 840 Whoppers, or
  • 1,782 Subway 6" Oven Roasted Chicken Breast sandwiches, or
  • 3,459 Taco Bell crunchy tacos, or
  • 2,502 slices of pepperoni pizza from Pizza Hut

What it Takes to Burn 588,000 Calories

  • To burn 588,000 calories, a 190 pound male would have to:
  • Backpack for 974 hours (41 days) nonstop, or
  • Walk for 2,253 hours (94 days) at 3 mph straight, or
  • Walk 6,759 miles (4,224 kilometers), or
  • Bike for 1,704 hours (71 days) at 10 mph, or
  • Bike 17,043 miles (10,652 kilometers), or
  • Play basketball nonstop for 938 hours 39 days), or
  • Play billiards for 2,722 hours (113 days), or
  • Go bowling for 2,270 hours (95 days), or
  • Stay on the golf course for 1,704 hours (71 days), or
  • Spend 758 hours (32 days) playing competitive football, or
  • Jump rope for 716 hours (30 days) straight!

Katie, you lost 50 lbs in 7 weeks! It took my friend a year to lose 100 lbs. I hope you realize how huge your accomplishment is! Congratulations to everyone who lost this week. And for those who gained, don't get discouraged. I thought for sure this would be my week to gain, but I lucked out. Here's to a new week....go team go!!!!

I don't know if this will still come up, I just thought I might add some "low-cal" food for thought... ;)

Great job everyone!! Lets keep up the great work!

Yvette - thank you! But in all fairness I'm a foot taller than your friend so losing 50 lbs on me isnt as big a deal as 50 lbs on her. She looks fantastic! What an inspiration.
